The race of faith lies before us. Daunted as muscles cramp and sweat stings our eyes, we run. But as Jesus said, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” The writer to the Hebrews tells the cold, hard truth to spur the runner on. Hebrews 12 is about running the race of faith, how to run it, where to focus, and the finish line.
To run this race, every hindrance, whether the world, the flesh, or the devil must be set aside. Endurance is essential, and the discipline of trained muscles gives strength for the long run. God corrects His children as fathers and coaches do, teaching to beware of distractions, the nattering voices from the sidelines meant to trip you up. Be at peace with others to diminish distractions. Maintain holiness, eliminating the heaviness of sinful behaviours. Beware the root of bitterness which springs up to cause a fall and perhaps injury.
Above all, focus on the Lord Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith. He looked to the joy on the other side of the cross and endured, despising the shame. Now He sits by His Father in heaven’s throne room. When the race seems unbearable, remember He endured more than we ever will. A glance at His marred face, scarred hands or feet reveals what He endured on the day of His crucifixion. Despite the rejection, pain, and anguish, He crossed the finish line. The knowledge that He’s gone on ahead of us renews our courage. “I will not forget you. See I have inscribed your name on My hands.”
Finally, the author describes the finish line. He contrasts two covenants. In the Old Testament, the worshippers came to a mountain with smoke and fire, a trumpet and words so terrifying they begged for them to stop. If an animal touched the mountain, it meant death. Even Moses trembled with fear. NO! We are coming to where the living God is. There are hosts of angels beyond imagination. Our loved ones whose spirits have been made complete are there. And above all, Jesus, is there. He who has run the race before us, bearing trials we will never experience, greets us at heaven’s door and cheers us through to the finish line with “Well done good and faithful servant!”
Run the race of faith with endurance. Keep your eyes on Jesus. You will reach the city of the living God.
