Jesus, lulled by the gentle waves of the sea, sank into a peaceful sleep. But the waves of the sea changed, and suddenly the wind intensified, creating waves which tossed the small craft from side to side.
The disciples with Him were familiar with the ways of the sea, and as they concentrated on rowing they leaned their backs into it with every muscle.
The wind howled, the sky darkened, and the waves rose like the mountains, drenching them beneath. The men gripped the oars and the sides of the boat, all sense of balance gone, and shivered from the cold.
The stories they had heard, along with their own terrifying experiences deepened their fears. The waves pushed them up and dropped them causing their stomachs to lurch. Their clothes clung to them as they shouted above the howling wind which was heavy with stinging rain. “Hold on!”
One frantically worked to remove the water from the boat, and the others clung to it. Powerless, they cried unto their sleeping master, “Jesus, we are about to die, save us!”
Jesus roused. “Why are you so timid and afraid, oh you of little faith?”
Then He stood! "Be still!"
The wind stopped, and the sea stilled. The sea was like glass, not a hint of a breeze, and silence.
The disciples, chilled and in awe, could not say it had never happened, nor could they explain the calm.
Instead, they marvelled.,
"What type of man is this that even the wind and the sea obey Him?"
